Satay House, Paddington

I LOVE Malaysian food and I’m always on the look out for good Malaysian restaurants.

A close friend of mine is Malaysian, and she took us to Satay House on one of our catch-ups. She has not been there before but heard good things about the place.

Satay House is about a 10 minute walk from Paddington station. The decor is simple yet elegant. The waitress who doesn’t look like a native Malaysian pronounces the menu items in Bahasa with ease (and dare I say authenticity).


  • A drink of rose water with lemonade while waiting for the comrades to arrive. Too limey and not enough sweetness.

The service was quite slow, but all is forgiven when the food arrived.


  • Chicken Satay (lamb option is also available) – juicy morsels of chicken thigh with irresistible char-coal grill marks & smell (yes, I know all about the cancer risks). Served with thick nutty satay sauce, and a side of rice cubes, fresh cucumber and shallots. They aced the test, and I allow them to keep the restaurant name.
  • Deep-fried tofu stuffed with beansprouts, cucumber strips, and sliced carrots. It looks so boring in the photo here, but tastes incredible. The outside of the tofu is crispy, the vegetables are refreshing, and the sweet sauce just pulls the whole thing together. Really good start.


  • Beef Redang – one of the best we’ve had. Chunky pieces of beef slow cooked in loads of spices and coconut cream. Meat is tender and full of flavour. Ten out of a ten, and a steal at £8.50 a plate. I’m so going back here for their rendang.
  • Eggplant stir-fried with fresh chillies and shrimp paste. I LOVE eggplants, and this was done extremely well. Must order if you love eggplants like I do.


  • Chicken wings in sweet & sour tomato sauce. I don’t get it, it’s like a stew you would make for little kids. Maybe it’s on the menu for guests who bring their kids, I don’t know. If you don’t have kids don’t order this one.
  • Deep fried fish pieces, stir-fried with onions, fresh chillies, and shrimp paste. The fish they use has a very meaty texture, deep-fried until the outside is crispy, then stir-fried with their special paste. Great flavour.


  • Morning glory, stir-fried – told ya we love our morning glories. This was beautifully done, very garlicky and very spicy. Love love love.
  • Roti bread – goes well with the thick rendang curry sauce, but I prefer rice. Not sure what the sauce on the side is, I didn’t try it.

The five gluttons agreed we were too full, but none of us were certain about skipping the dessert (typical). So we ordered “a few to share”. We actually planned to order three, but luckily their shaved ice machine is out of action so we decided to only order two.


  • Hot mung bean soup – oh so sweet and oh so good. Mung beans are cooked down in thick syrupy coconut milk, but what makes it special is the delicious palm sugar smell & flavour. Great dessert.
  • Banana fritters with ice cream – we expected so much more. The batter wasn’t light or crispy, and the banana was not sweet. We made it worse by forgetting to pour the syrup on the fritters. Sad.

We really enjoyed our meal at Satay House, and it’s now our number one Malaysia restaurant in London.

The only issue I have with is their rice. For some reasons they serve basmati rice. What?

If they have a Jasmine rice option this place would be absolutely perfect.

Menu, location, etc:
